Incompatible software applications result in significant waste in the MEP industries. The lack of interoperability in the exchange of information among multiple programs and users presents a challange in the MEP disciplines to create information models to facilitate communications between software packages. The New Horizon Foundation study, "Impact of Incompatible Software on HVAC and Sheet Metal Contractors" has identified interoperability deficiencies in that sector of the MEP industry.

SMACNA, NECA and MCAA will identify industry and technical workgroup members to discuss and organize model information and data and process exchange information needs, in the MEP disciplines.

Scope

The project will address the following issues: Identify and examine the process flow, project stages and participants in MEP BIM applications as a prerequisite to addressing data integration. Add to the library of IFC data models in the sheet metal, HVAC, mechanical and electrical construction sectors. Add to, and extend existing MEP attributes in greater detail. Examine and address the issue of IFC data file size and manageability. Initiate contact/survey with products/parts companies to use a standardized naming platform. Communicate with participating associations' research foundations and encourage participation at some level in these endeavors.
