BIMOP - The BIM for Owners Project

Much has been said and written about the inefficiencies of the construction industry. Fragmented in its makeup and slow to adopt change, statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that the construction industry productivity not only lags behind other industries, but is also in decline. The costs of these inefficiencies are palpable, costing billions of dollars annually.

No longer willing to yield to a tradition of inefficiency, building owners are leading the charge for a smarter process. As change agents for the industry, both public and private owners will challenge their providers to deliver facilities faster, better, safer and at lower cost. Owners are using and requiring BIM and other technologies to enable lean practices to identify and eliminate waste in the entire facility delivery cycle. They expect their design construction partners to be proactive in applying these concepts and are looking tangible results from bid through implementation at the site.

The BIM for Owners (BIMOP) Project will act as the focal point and clearing house for information that Owners, Developers, and Facility Managers that need to understand and leverage the changes underway in the industry. BIMOP will reflect the Owners life cycle perspective for whom the building as an asset, not just a project, to be managed over its life cycle. Owners will benefit from an organized industry wide approach.  BIMOP will provide the guidance that owners need to guide the impact that information systems have on their facility assets.

Scope

BIMOP should be clearly distinguished from of NBIMS and IFC Standards initiatives. Those standards are focused on interoperability at a software level and the success of those efforts is critical to achieving the business objectives that Owners seek. The full potential of information systems for the facility lifecycle will take years to realize. We still have much to learn about the process of working together more closely, and software vendors promise to deliver increasingly smart tools as well. A process that shares evolving knowledge is consistent with the model of collaboration and transparency that is fundamental to leveraging the potential of information technology for facility life cycle management. Strategic Roadmap - a framework for assessing an organizations capital facility efforts in the interest of identifying opportunities for improvement using information technologies to improve internal processes and interoperability with external stakeholders in the capital facilities process. The roadmap will provide a framework for using information technology to improve the planning, design, construction, and facility management processes. Peer Review - An opportunity to gauge use of information technology on capital projects and facility management by other Owners. Documentation based on a series of detailed interviews with Owners and the design consultants/EPCs that serve them. The results will be documented and presented to as a measure of F adoption industry within that segment of the industry of greatest interest to Abbott. Capital Projects Design and Construction Process and Information Delivery Requirements -Owners need to document process, workflows, collaboration models and information deliverables they expect their design and construction partners to use on projects. Notable examples have already been developed and our intent is to use these guidelines to provide a framework for an Industry Best Practices model. Qualifying the information technology skills of service providers - guidance and tools for Owners to use as they select service providers. A Model BIM File - What should a BIM file deliverable that can be used for life cycle of a facility? BIMOP will develop and provide a sample file(s) that reflect the requirements of Owners.
