NBIMS-US™ Balloting

The buildingSMART alliance is currently in the process of accepting proposed changes, known as ballot submissions, to the National BIM Standard — United States™ (NBIMS-US). This page provides a list and status of ballot submissions that are currently under consideration for Version 2 of the NBIMS-US. It does not provide access to the submissions themselves. If you would like to participate in the NBIMS-US effort and gain access to the ballot submissions listed below, please join the Institute, the Alliance, and the NBIMS-US Project Committee. For more information, please click here.

If you do not see a ballot for a specific subject of interest, either get involved in the NBIMS-US Project Committee and submit your ballot or let the Alliance know by contacting either Dominique Fernandez or Deke Smith to be connected with someone who can help you get your proposed submission on the ballot.

As soon as a ballot is submitted, it is assigned a sequential ballot number (for example, on the ballot number V2-001, the V2 designates this ballot as being considered for Version 2 of the NBIMS-US and the 001 shows that it is the first ballot received). Each ballot will also have one of the statuses below depending on its current disposition:

Ballot Statuses

  • Submitted — Upon submission, the ballot will be given this status.
  • Assigned — All submitted ballots will be assigned to a Workgroup upon receipt. The Workgroup will then have 28 days to work with the author to ensure the ballot is ready to be considered for inclusion in the rest of the commenting and voting process.
  • Modified — The ballot has been modified from its original submission and is again being considered by the Workgroup.
  • Approved — The ballot has been approved by simple majority of the Workgroup to be considered by the Project Committee for commenting and voting as part of the NBIMS-US.
  • Approved as Noted — The ballot has been approved by simple majority of the Workgroup but has specific notes as to its status.
  • Revise/Resubmit —The ballot submission is under revision or needs to be resubmitted for consideration. The 28-day clock will restart once the ballot has been resubmitted as a revised submission.
  • Rejected —The ballot has been rejected by the Workgroup and may be resubmitted in accordance with the Rules of Governance (PDF).
  • Blue Sky — These are not true ballots. See below for an explanation and list.
  • Editorial — The ballot is an editorial change and will not require a vote of the membership.

Blue Sky Submissions

The Alliance created this category so that new ideas could be vetted without going through the time requirements governing ballot submissions. Blue Sky submissions are those that have been submitted for consideration and mentoring to be developed into a true ballot. They may require more work than a regular ballot to prepare them for consideration. Blue Sky submissions are not official ballots. Therefore, they do not come under the purview of the Rules of Governance. The following items are Blue Sky submissions:
