NBIMS-US™ Balloting

The buildingSMART alliance™ will soon be accepting proposed changes, known as ballot submissions, to the National BIM Standard – United States™ (NBIMS-US). This page will provide a list and status of ballot submissions under consideration for Version 3 of the NBIMS-US. It does not provide access to the submissions themselves. If you would like to participate in the NBIMS-US effort and gain access to the ballot submissions, please join the Institute's Alliance and the NBIMS-US Project Committee. For more information, please click here.

For more information on how to get involved in the NBIMS-US Project Committee and submit a ballot item contact either Dominique Fernandez or Deke Smith.

In accordance with NBIMS-US Rules of Governance, each ballot item will be reviewed by a standing Workgroup and Subcommittee for both conformance to the ballot item submittal requirements and the merits of the issue proposed in the submittal. Following the Workgroup and Subcommittee 28 day ballot item review the committees will forward the reviewed submission to the full membership with one of the following review decisions:

  • Approved: No changes necessary. The ballot item will be forwarded to the full NBIMS-US membership as-is.
  • Approved as noted: Minor changes have been agreed upon by the reviewing Workgroup or Subcommittee and the author. The ballot item will be forwarded to the NBIMS-US membership with approved revisions incorporated into the ballot item by the Workgroup/Subcommittee. Minor changes will be documented on the page labeled, "Ballot Item Modifications."
  • Revise/resubmit: Errors or omissions are substantial. The author needs to revise the ballot item and resubmit it. A list of errors or omissions, with recommended changes, will be provided to the author by the Workgroup/Subcommittee.
  • Rejected: The ballot item is not in the best interest of the NBIMS-US. Rejected ballot items can be resubmit by petition to the NBIMS-US Planning Committee for consideration.
  • Editorial: The ballot item is an editorial change and will not require a vote of the membership.

Blue Sky Submissions

The Alliance created this category so that new ideas could be vetted without going through the time requirements governing ballot submissions. Blue Sky submissions are those that have been submitted for consideration and mentoring to be developed into a true ballot. They may require more work than a regular ballot to prepare them for consideration. Blue Sky submissions are not official ballots. Therefore, they do not come under the purview of the Rules of Governance. The following items are Blue Sky submissions:
