The following is the monthly report for the buildingSMART alliance for May 2011:
- buildingSMART alliance reached another major milestone this past month with the receipt of forty-five documents submitted by members of the facility industry. Of those forty-five submissions eight were "blue sky submissions". Documents that are not quite ready to be ballots. They need more work but want to be recognized as works in progress.
- Of the thirty-seven ballots they ranged from OmniClass tables, to naming conventions. COBie was of course one of the ballots also. The entire list can be found on the buildingSMART alliance web site under the NBIMS-US™ web page for balloting.
- The National CAD Standard version 5 was officially announced at the AIA convention. It is now virtual to improve the user experience. More on this event can be found in the press release forum here: http://www.buildingsmartalliance.org/index.php/bsa/newsevents/news/Entry/ncs_v5_released
- We are still working on the web site improvements and hope to have those up very soon, ideally before next month's report.
- The Board of Direction met and their repost is available here: http://projects.buildingsmartalliance.org/files/?artifact_id=4079
- A highlight of the meeting, in addition to the NBIMS-US, was the unveiling of a research agenda developed by IFMA-I2SL-NIBS with support from Virginia Tech. The complete document is available here: http://projects.buildingsmartalliance.org/files/?artifact_id=4022
- On the international front this past month brought the first buildingSMART International Senior Advisory Committee Meeting in New Your City at the newly renovated New York office of HOK at their new location on Bryant Park. The meeting involved senior international thought managers from all phases of the facilities industry. The goal of the committee is to listen more closely to the direction the industry is headed and ensure that we are fully engaged.
- The meeting was followed by the buildingSMART International Council meeting in Waltham, Massachusetts hosted by FM Global. This meeting dealt with the motions from the meetings in Abu Dhabi. It also discussed the excellent progress of the submission to ISO of ifc4 to become a full ISO standard (ISO 16739). In addition a plan is being drawn up for the roll-out of ifc4 and a plan to overcome any backward compatibility issues with IFC2x3. Simple ifcXML was also discussed. In addition the BSI budget was discussed. Overall the health of BSI is at an acceptable level. We will make minutes of that meeting available when they are available.
- At the same time the meetings were occurring in New York, David Jordani was delivering the Alliance report to the NIBS Coordinating Council. We will be working harder to ensure that all Institute councils see the relationship with BIM.
- Later in the month the Executive Committee met with Henry Green, President of the Institute to discuss plans to overcome the current financial difficulties the Alliance is experiencing. Many of the issues relate to being able to have more dedicated hours to coordinating the massive effort we have underway to transform the industry. Your direct support is needed.
- Truly we can only continue our work with your support. We are making great progress especially with the National BIM Standard, but as noted we also released version 5 of the National CAD Standard this month. This is work that helps the industry substantially by reducing time and ensuring that we communicate better. Please ensure that you renew your membership, or join the Alliance if you are not a member.
